This event occurred on my second birthday, and my family lived two kilometers from Moorabbin Airport, where he took off from. My dad used to tune into the control tower on his short wave radio and listen to what was going on. He used to take me down to the runway to watch the planes take off. I recommend researching the Westall UFO incident which occurred about a decade prior to this in a town called Westall, which is less than 10km from Moorabbin Airport. It happened in broad daylight and was witnessed by over a hundred school children. My dad said it garnered my more press than the Valentich disappearance. Growing up in the area I've heard of rumours of tunnels under the airport which house military vehicles, but I've never seen any hard evidence to this effect. They're just local folktales. Moorabbin Airport I think still is the busiest light aircraft airport in the southern hemisphere.
